Triveni Sangam (Somnath)

🛕 Triveni Sangam (Somnath) **Triveni Ghat** (Triveni Sangam + "Moksha Teerth") = Birth, Life, and Death. **This divine pilgrimage site is located on the route to Shri Somnath Shri Dehotsarg.** This *Teerth* (pilgrimage site) is extremely sacred, ancient, and famous in the Puranas. It is the meeting point (**Sangam**) of three rivers—**Kapila, Hiranya, and Saraswati**—with the sea. According to mythology, during the great battle between the Gods and Demons (*Dev-Danav Sangram*), a massive and fierce fire known as *Vadvanal* was produced. To calm this fire, it was reduced into a small, condensed form (*Suchimukh*), filled into a pot, and carried on her head by the virgin Goddess Saraswati. She brought it here and immersed it into the sea, granting it liberation. Performing **Pitru Shraddh** (rituals for ancestors) holds immense importance here. Taking a holy bath at this spot is considered as significant as bathing at the Ganga-Yamuna Sangam. The Somnath Trust has built a massive 700-foot-long bathing **Ghat** here. On April 19, 1995, the ashes (*Asthi*) of India's great son and former Prime Minister, Shri Morarjibhai Desai, were immersed here by his son Shri Kantibhai Desai. Since then, this ghat has been officially named **"Shri Morarji Desai Ghat."**  🛕 Special Religious Significance (Connected to Lord Shri Ram) According to beliefs and scriptures, Lord Shri Ram visited the Prabhas Kshetra (Somnath) during the **Treta Yuga**. He came to this holy land after his victory over Ravana in Lanka. Prabhas Teerth and Triveni Sangam have been considered a supremely holy **Moksha Teerth** (pilgrimage of salvation) since ancient times. It is mentioned that Lord Ram primarily performed two tasks here:  1. **Pitru Shraddh and Tarpan:** Lord Shri Ram performed the *Pitru Tarpan* and *Shraddh* rituals at the holy ghats of Triveni Sangam for the peace of the soul of his father, King Dasharath, and his other ancestors.  2. **Brahmahatya Dosh Nivaran (Atonement for killing a Brahmin):** Since Ravana was a highly learned Brahmin (the son of Rishi Vishrava), Lord Ram incurred the sin (*Dosh*) of *Brahmahatya* by killing him. To get liberation from this great sin and perform **Prayaschit** (atonement), He worshiped Lord Shiva here at Somnath (Prabhas Kshetra). **Skanda Purana (Prabhas Khand):** The 'Prabhas Khand' of the *Skanda Purana*, which is the largest among the Mahapuranas of Hindu Dharma, describes the glory of Prabhas Kshetra and Triveni Sangam in great detail. It clearly mentions Lord Ram's arrival at Prabhas Kshetra, His *Shraddh Karma*, and the significance of the pilgrimage sites located here. 🛕 Religious Importance  * It is the holy confluence of three rivers.  * **Teerth Snan** (Holy bathing).  * **Daan-Punya** (Performing charity and earning spiritual merit).  * Deeply connected with Lord Shri Krishna's **Dehotsarg** (leaving the mortal body).  * Highly important for the destruction of sins and the attainment of *Punya* (virtues).  * It is the supreme place for **Pitru Karma** (rituals for ancestors, like Shraddh).  * An inseparable part of the Somnath Yatra. 🛕 Special Traditions  * A special **Sangam Aarti** is performed here in the evening (similar to the tradition of Ganga Aarti).  * The place sees large crowds of devotees, especially during the holy month of *Shravan*, *Amavasya* (new moon day), and during festivals.  * Thousands of pilgrims visit this sacred site from all over the country and abroad.
